Schoharie Chapter, NSDAR Organized May 6, 1910 Chartered June 3, 1910 Incorporated August 8, 1913
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.
The members of the Schoharie Chapter, NSDAR, have been the century-long caretakers of Lasell Hall in the Village of Schoharie. The building was erected in 1795 by John Lawyer as a tavern. In 1805, the property was acquired by the Lasell family, whose heirs deeded the building to the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in 1913.
The original trustees of the Schoharie Library were members of the DAR, and in 1916 the community's public library was started in two rooms on the second floor of Lasell Hall. The library expanded to fill much of the second floor and the impetus for moving the library to its current location on Knower Avenue was the structural damage from the weight of the books.
